Mission. CGM Open is a Member Section of OASIS, made up of vendors and users dedicated to open and interoperable standards for the exchange of graphical information. The principal mission of CGM Open is to accelerate the further adoption, application, and implementation of the Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM), the ISO standard for open interchange of structured graphical objects and their associated attributes.

Deliverables. A principal and important deliverable of CGM Open is WebCGM -- a CGM profile to make CGM easy to adopt and practical to use in real world, open systems Web applications. The technical work of CGM Open is carried out by the CGM Open WebCGM TC.

Cooperation. The work of CGM Open complements that of standards bodies such as ISO. CGM Open maintains an active set of liaisons to several such bodies. WebCGM, for example, was developed in liaison and collaboration with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Open forum. CGM Open provides its members with an open forum to discuss market needs and directions, and to develop and provide guidelines to enhance product interoperability. The consortium receives, coordinates, and disseminates information describing CGM methodologies, technologies, and implementations.

History. CGM Open began life in 1998 as CGM Open Consortium Inc. In 1999 CGM Open entered into an Affiliation Agreement with OASIS (then SGML Open) and operated for almost five years as an OASIS affiliate. In 2004, CGM Open integrated into OASIS as a Member Section.
